Apparently one of Facebook's summer plans was to acquire the uber-popular photo sharing site, Instagram. What's appealing to people about Instagram is the filters. You can make your run of the mill photo of your kid in the swimming pool look like a Polaroid from the 70's or give it a pinhole, black and white look. People seem to like to turn their shiny, new digital photos into grainy portraits of the past.
So what's a company that's valued at $65 billion to do when Instagram says "no thanks?" Build it themselves. Facebook is planning on integrating it's own Instagram-like photo filtering features. Two unnamed engineers at Facebook say the app has been ready for a while, but they want to add more and different filters. The New York Times also reports: "Facebook might have more competition to worry about than just Instagram. Programming code found in the upcoming release of Apple's iOS 5 shows a series of new photo filters that are likely to be integrated directly into Apple's mobile platform, MG Siegler of the blog TechCrunch noted earlier this month."
