For Marketplace, Friday, August 5, 2011
Employers added 117,000 jobs in July, a feeble bright spot amidst a storm of dismal business news. The markets had another turbulent day today, and it’s all beginning to have an long-lasting effect on our economic outlook. Europe, meanwhile, continues to struggle with its financial crisis.
Back here in the U.S., home ownership numbers are down — but is a country full of renters so bad? The Better Block Project aims to change perceptions of city neighborhoods with 24-hour civic strike teams. Crumbs Bake Shop’s Mia Bauer gave her summer reading pick. And we looked at the difference between canning or bottling beer. Here are the songs we played:
- Love You Madly – CakeBuy
- I Need A Dollar – Aloe BlaccBuy
- Spilt Milk – DujeousBuy
- Westworld – JapancakesBuy
- Bottom’s Up – Karaoke HittsBuy
Marketplace is on a mission.
We believe Main Street matters as much as Wall Street, economic news is made relevant and real through human stories, and a touch of humor helps enliven topics you might typically find…well, dull.
Through the signature style that only Marketplace can deliver, we’re on a mission to raise the economic intelligence of the country—but we don’t do it alone. We count on listeners and readers like you to keep this public service free and accessible to all. Will you become a partner in our mission today?
