Stop by Google.com today and you can see the future of web design. The home page illustration is a tribute to the Alexander Calder on the sculptor's birthday. But Calder isn't the big deal here (sorry, Calder). The Doodle is rendered in HTML5, the powerful new standard that can render illustrations to make them look way cooler. You'll need the latest version of your browser to see it, probably. Google's Jered Wierzbicki designed it and says it uses vector graphics to perform 3D rendering. I'm not quite sure what that means but a lot of web designers are in a hurry to learn HTML5 and work with its possibilities. Meanwhile, website owners are pushing their designers to get up to date on the new standard and browser companies are rolling out versions that support it. For you, it just means things are going to get a lot more cool looking.
