Amazon seeks to be a player in streaming entertainment

John Moe Jul 21, 2011

Customers who are members of Amazon Prime, the premium Amazon.com service that also sounds like a new sort of Transformer, are going to be able to watch a whole lot of CBS programming at no extra charge. CBS and Amazon struck a deal to put some 2,000 episodes of CBS shows on Amazon’s streaming service. It’s a non-exclusive deal, the same shows are already available on Netflix, and while this now bumps Amazon’s digital offerings to around 8,000 shows and movies, that’s still way below Netflix’s estimated 20,000 offerings. But obviously this is a case of a company trying to compete against Netflix and possibly trying to get a few solid punches in while Netflix is recovering from the bad PR received for its new pricing scheme.
