Most data is transmitted through a radio spectrum, which is getting smaller and smaller. Enter Li-Fi, or sending data through light. The idea has been around since the late 19th century, according to the New York Times, but with the rise in LED technology and increasing need to transmit more data, scientists have been making great strides recently.

At a recent TED conference, Dr. Harald Hass of the University of Edinburgh used the technology to transmit a video from a light source to a screen.
