Apple speaks about data issue

John Moe Apr 27, 2011

Finally. And it only took them a week! The company released a statement this morning saying that their devices are not tracking your specific location, they’re just caching the hotspots and data towers you access so that you can access them quicker in the future. Some of those towers, they say, might be a hundred miles away. Apple says the data is sent to the company in anonymous encrypted form so they can build a crowd sourced database of information on coverage. Information on data crashes is shared, anonymously, with third party companies to help debug apps.

As for what we reported yesterday, that the tracking still happens even when location services are turned off, they say that’s a bug and they’ll fix it and whoops.

So nothing really shocking here, kind of in line with what people have been saying for the last week but why did it take them so long. Now there are lawsuits and STRONGLY WORDED LETTERS from members of congress.

Also, in news that does not matter, the white iPhone 4 will be available tomorrow.
