Amazon mum on cloud crash

John Moe Apr 22, 2011

Amazon hasn’t said much about why its cloud services had an outage Wednesday into Thursday. Amazon managed to get its servers back up and running on Thursday evening, but Foursquare, Quora and Reddit all had a big wake up call — what do you do when the servers you depend on from Amazon crash and render your business inaccessible? (Netflix, which uses the same Web-based services from Amazon did not have any problems). Thing is – this outage isn’t all that surprising. Everybody knows it can happen, and everyone expects it will happen again. But, as we move closer and closer to the cloud all the time, are businesses preparing for outages like this?
