Almost a year to date after the oil rig Deepwater Horizon caught fire following an explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, The Consumerist has named BP the Worst Company in America.

The list is created with a series of bracket-like polls open to Consumerist readers. This year, British Petroleum narrowly beat Bank of America with a 50.87 percent vote in the final poll to earn the coveted Gold Poo Award and the title “worst company in America.”

The companies nominated included Citibank, DirectTV, Dish Networks, United Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, GameStop, WalMart, Ticketmaster, PayPal, Sony, Dell, CapitalOne, American Express, Wells Fargo, Chase, Toyota, TimeWarner Cable, Facebook, UnitedHealth Group, Well Point, CVS Pharmacy, Johnson & Johnson, Comcast, Charter, RadioShack, Best Buy, AT&T, Verizon, Apple and Microsoft.

The Consumerist, which is now owned by Consumer Reports, collects company nominations, polls and voting based on reader and user participation.

Bank of America won its initial bracket against Citi with an astonishing 80.92 percent of the votes. And BP walloped Toyota in its first match-up with 90.11 percent of the polls.

The Final Four featured Bank of America vs. Ticketmaster and BP vs. Comcast.
