Defense Department wants to share its own network security with civilian networks

Deputy secretary of defense William Lynn said yesterday that the aggressive anti-hacking system used by the Pentagon should be available to other domestic computer networks. It’s an approach less like a brick wall and more like, according to Lynn, a cross between a sharpshooter and a sentry, it can hunt within the network for malicious code or intruders. There may be privacy concerns, writes Declan McCullagh in Wired, hinging on whether the military merely licenses the software to private companies or whether it seeks to assert some kind of security controls.
