Daniel Altman is an economist at New York University’s Stern School of Business, and in his new book he does what economists love to do – make predictions. In this book, he lists a dozen trends that he expects will reshape the global economy. Perhaps the most surprising are that China will surpass the U.S. as the world’s strongest economy, and then the U.S. will pass it again; the European Union will splinter apart within the next century; and that the global recession will give rise to an enormous financial black market outside the traditional centers of commerce. And he argues that the political and economic institutions currently in place aren’t adequate to handle long-term challenges like global warming and immigration.
