Netflix as a gateway to cable cord cutting

John Moe Jan 6, 2011

It’s kind of obvious, yes, but nice to have some numbers to go with it.
JP Morgan issued a survey that showed 47% of people who already have Netflix streaming would consider giving up cable. That’s 14% more than those who don’t. That means 34% of people who don’t even use Netflix but do have cable would consider dropping the whole thing. The pivotal ingredient in this process, of course, isn’t entertainment (Netflix and Hulu Plus are pretty good at that) but live sports and, to a lesser extent, news. Microsoft has been working with ESPN on running live shows through Xbox so we shall see what happens there. Seems like a good time to own an Xbox.
