Krugerrands in Salvation Army kettles

Kai Ryssdal Dec 24, 2010

An observation about the spirit of the season. I learned today a 1983 South African Krugerrand is worth about $1,400. I know that because somebody dropped one — they’re gold coins — in a Salvation Army collection pot in Bloomfield, Colo. the other day.

Lest you think it was horrible mistake by an absent-minded coin collector, Krugerrands have been found in Salvation Army kettles in Indiana, Washington and Florida as well.

So there you have it.
