Marketplace Money took to the road this week and hit up Philadelphia for our special show on health care. Philly is often consider the birthplace of health care, thanks to its ties to the Father of Surgery, the invention of Tylenol, and much more. Marketplace’s health care reporter looked at the invention of health care, beginning with Ben Franklin’s ties to the pharmaceutical industry, followed by a history lesson on Father of Surgery Philip Physick, and then a visit to the doc for the reasons behind the annual physical. Tess herself visited the doctor’s office to investigate into why we end up spending so much time in the waiting room. The monetary value and its similarities to retirement also got debated. We had a story about how companies are using incentives to keep employees healthy (and cheap, in terms of health insurance), and another story about how doctors-to-be are preparing for the Internet-spoiled ‘informed patient.’ We also had a skit with the Philly’s Pig Iron Theatre Company.
