For Marketplace Morning Report, Wednesday, October 20, 2010

Today we discussed the changing financial landscape in Europe, from Britain tackling its budget by cutting public sector jobs to the strikes in France over a potential raise retirement age. Both actions would help their country’s deficit, but citizens do not approve.

We also looked at American transportation issues. The San Joaquin valley in California is facing a pending tax on cars, which would be the first citizen fine to pay for federal pollution. And we heard from Florida where President Obama’s proposed high speed train is facing new opposition as midterm elections approach.

Coal mines in Chicago are suspected to cause illnesses and emergency room visits. Add today’s recall to the already long list of recalls this year from Toyoda, which will affect 1.5 million vehicles, half of which are in the U.S.

Third quarter earnings are up, joblessness benefits are down, and fourth quarter earnings look strong for airline companies, and companies like AT&T and Caterpillar.

Here are the songs we played:

  • Ceremony — Yes But NoBuy
  • Class System featuring Pharrell Williams & Julee Cruise — Handsome Boy Modeling SchoolBuy
  • Lex — RatatatBuy
  • Lay Down Sally — Eric ClaptonBuy
  • Kinna Sohna– Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Buy
