The website Wikileaks recently posted what it claims are five hundred thousand intercepted text pager messages just before and just after the attacks of September 11, 2001. They appear to come from the types of pagers carried by Pentagon officials, the FBI, the NYPD.

Some messages are computer generated error reports from businesses inside the World Trade Center. Some are just New Yorkers looking for each other.

Wikileaks publishes leaked information from governments and corporations. But why take private messages and post them publicly 8 years later?

Marketplace is on a mission.

We believe Main Street matters as much as Wall Street, economic news is made relevant and real through human stories, and a touch of humor helps enliven topics you might typically find…well, dull.

Through the signature style that only Marketplace can deliver, we’re on a mission to raise the economic intelligence of the country—but we don’t do it alone. We count on listeners and readers like you to keep this public service free and accessible to all. Will you become a partner in our mission today?
