Marketplace Scratch Pad

Think Big

Scott Jagow Sep 29, 2009

Every once in a while, I stumble across a new website that reels me in, and I feel compelled to share it. I found one this morning that I think you’ll enjoy.

It’s called Bigthink.com, described as a “global forum for connecting people and ideas.” It’s essentially a collection of short video vignettes with experts from all walks of life. Take your time and peruse the site, but I’ve pulled a few examples from the business section.

Here, Marketplace commentator and Duke behavioral economics professor Dan Ariely describes why more money & big bonuses aren’t necessarily good motivators. He makes some interesting points. “If I gave you $10,000 to be funny in the next minute, could you do it?”

Business consultant and “Good to Great” author Jim Collins tells us why some companies excel during the bad times. It’s because of their behavior during the good times:

Peter Brabeck, chairman of Nestlé, takes on the subject of water. About 5:00 in, he talks about how we’ll run out of water faster than oil, unless we change the degree to which water is considered a human right:

Here, writer Gay Talese talks about drunkenness at the New York Times newsroom in the sixties — “where men passed out on typewriters, and no one was quite sure just how the paper actually got out.”

Good stuff! Just passing it along…
