BIO: Gregg Steinhafel

Gregg Steinhafel became CEO of Target Corp. in 2008. He was pretty much groomed for the post — Steinhafel has been the company’s president since 1999, and has been with the Minneapolis-based retail giant since 1979.

Steinhafel, a Milwaukee-area native, has known the value of hands-on hard work since he was little. His grandfather, an Austrian immigrant, founded the Steinhafels Furniture store in Milwaukee in 1934. Gregg’s father, Gary, worked at the store and subsidized its income by playing in a local band. And when Greg was in grade school, he began helping out at the furniture store. He mopped floors, pulled weeds and did whatever that needed done.

In 1979, Steinhafel was recruited as a merchandising trainee by Target. He is a graduate of Carroll College and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
