Movies more on demand than ever

TEXT OF STORY

SCOTT JAGOW: Here’s how fast technology moves now: Yesterday, we told you about Wal-Mart’s new online movie store for computers and portable devices. Today, two other companies are taking this a step further. Amazon and TiVo are testing a service that’ll let you watch the movies on your TV. Alisa Roth has more.

ALISA ROTH: If you want to download a movie or TV show from most companies, the video ends up on your PC.

Analyst Daniel Ernst:

DANIEL ERNST: Watching video content on your PC is interesting, it’s you know, a bit of a time waster at work, but it’s not something you truly want to do when you get home is boot up your PC and sit at your desk.

The new Amazon-TiVo system uses a TiVo box and high-speed Internet access to offer TV episodes as well as movies to rent or buy.

Ernst says the new service will help TiVo stand out from the competition and get further into the online retailing business.

Amazon already offers a video download service, but the old version only let users download to a PC. The new service will let the company make better use of the digital video library it bought last year.

And maybe make up some revenue from falling DVD sales.
