TEXT OF STORY

SCOTT JAGOW: The Census Bureau came out this morning with some pretty startling stats on how we use media. Americans spend almost five of 12 months tuning in. Dan Grech reports.

DAN GRECH: Next year, the average American will watch 65 days of TV and listen to 41 days of radio.

They’ll also spend 12 days surfing the Internet and playing video games.

Jim Rutherfurd is with Veronis Sulher Stevenson, the firm that conducted the media survey for the Census Bureau.

JIM RUTHERFORD: The mix is changing, but in the totality we continue to consume more and more media. We’re now up to nine and a half hours a day, on our way to 10 hours a day of consumer media consumption by the year 2010.

One change Rutherford has noticed is people are often using multiple forms of media at once.

RUTHERFORD: You got your iPod plugged in, the TV is on maybe in the background, and you’re flipping through a magazine.

Also, this year for the first time, Internet usage surpassed newspaper reading.
