During the March 18th Getting Peersonal, Liz Pulliam, while discussing aid to Japan, said, "Two words, Red Cross." I have two other words: "The Animals." Domesticated animals, in particular, are highly dependent on their human caretakers for their well being and survival. When these caretakers are suddenly not available or do not have adequate access to resources beyond what they require for themselves, animals dependent on them are left to fend for themselves, and, in most cases, they cannot or cannot for long. Meanwhile, animal rescue agencies become quickly overwhelmed and are unable to meet the severe level of need that erupts before them. And the amount of time that lost or homeless animals need to be cared for, and owners or new homes located can be lengthy and expensive. I urge your listeners to think about this also when they make disaster relief donations. Regarding the situation in Japan, they can find excellent ways to help with animal rescue by going to the web sites bestfriends.org and greatergood.org. And, oh yes, please remember this again when we are faced with the next catastrophe.
