Macy's Corporate Profile

On October 28, 1858, Macy's opened its doors in New York City. Sales totaled $11.06 on that first day of business. Today, Macy's is the nation's top department store chain, with more than 800 stores in 45 states and annual sales of more than $26 billion. The retail behemoth operates four regional divisions: Macy's East, Macy's Central, Macy's Florida and Macy's West, and the Bloomingdale's chain.

Quaker businessman Rowland Hussey Macy founded Macy's as a dry goods store in downtown Haverhill, Mass. in 1851. New owners Isidor Straus and his brother Nathan Straus were at the helm by the time Macy's flagship store was moved to New York's Herald Square.

The company went public in 1922 and began a period of expansion outside of New York City. It acquired department stores in Atlanta, Newark, San Francisco and Kansas City, among other places. In the 1980s, Macy's opened stores in Houston, Dallas, Atlanta and several cities in Florida.

In 1994, Federated Department Stores merged with Macy's. And in February 2007 Federated Department Stores announced it was changing its corporate name to Macy's Group, Inc.

I visited Macys at the King of Prussia Mall today, in search of sun dresses for my upcoming vacation. To my surprise and dissapointment the Womens - Plus Size department is located in the "Basement" area of the department store and in close proximity to box springs and mattresses. My question is...why has Macys alienated Plus Size ladies from the Womens department on the second floor? Does this mean that the Plus Size ladies Dollars are of less worth then the dollars spent by ladies who are not Plus Size -on the second floor...or has Macys department planners simply discriminated against Plus Sized Ladies? The basement location is in fact inferior in design, layout, and staffing when compared to location and services that are in the ladies department on the second floor. In addition...the basement location sends a condescending message to the customer. In this case in particular...Separate is Not Equal! An embarrassed and annoyed customer.

There isn't enough space to list all of the BAD experiences I've had at Macy's. Suffice to say, I now shop at Nordstrom and JC Penney and I've never looked back. Nordstrom truly knows what customer service is all about!

planit tilt is building a new macys in texas and after my general was paid by macys for Plan-it Tilt's work approved and accepted in nov08 by macys, now the gen. is refuseing to pay plan-it tilt for this time period - on behalf of the owner and all employees of Plan-it Tilt : "We Did the Work and We Want Our Money, We Deserve It".The reasons that the general gives for taking our money is all totally bogus. Is there anyone at Macy's who will hear us?

I been a customer since G Fox and always payed my bills on time, called customer service and man not a gentelmen on the other side of the phone was very rude. I asked that me and my son have ajoint card and I was supposed to get a notice that I was goint to be platinum card because of bad times I din't spend 2,500.00. We where spending more then that We paid cash alot of times just to be safe.because of the way times are. He and the supervisor just laugh because I was upset and had a cold. I never saw customer service like that in my life. I'm really desapointed with Macy's I then called back , but they must have put a message on my card, that the next customer service lady, was very nice , but told me to go to Macy's and spend 170.00 and she would send the Elite cards, because that's all I needed, It wasn't true . I went and spend the money called back and they said they where sorry that wasn't true.while in the store , everyone was very nice, but didn't understand, why it forced them to ask for ID when they knew me. they put my linsece to continue. My nices have drop there Macy's cards , and Now I know why. Macy's If You care to keep me as a customer call me, if not. I know what to do. e-mail me

2/6/09 After attending a movie at the mall, I decided to walk over to Macy's. I left my handbag in my car (with my husband) and carried in just my Macy's credit card/coupons. After finding a few items ( totaling just $28) I tried to purchase them. I was informed that I needed to produce a license to verify who I am. I explained that my license was in the car, at a distance from the store, and asked that customer service be contacted so I could verify who I am over the phone. After answering a litany of questions including providing ss#, address, and other personal info, the customer service rep asked me to wait on the phone to talk to a supervisor. After waiting a long five minutes, a Mr. Stone came on the phone, made me answer all the same questions and then started asking ridiculous questions like giving me a false address and asking me to verify. My patience ran out and I decided to leave the store. Under the pretence of protecting the customer, Macy's is becoming very "intrusive" and demanding that customers be constantly "proofed" in order to purchase merchandise. As I walked back to the car I decided that enough is enough and that I could live my life without the nonsense that Macy's puts its customers through. I really worry that someone in Macy's customer service is collecting all this personal info and possibly selling it to people who truly steal identities.
Shame on Macy's for going over the top to secure personal info.

I am stunned...I recently was going to purchase some "more" furniture from your Fresno, Ca. store and just now got off the phone with the sales rep., who informed me that his "Manager" would not be able to work with me on a discounted delivery price of $80.00.
In these tough economic times I am amazed that we are quibbling over such a small amount on the sale of $2000.00. In the last 1 1/2 years I have purchased appoximately $10,000.00 from macy's furniture...and that is in addition to my regular Macy's account.Very sad that Macy's has managers who still do NOT get it!!
