Robot hummingbirds!

John Moe Jun 20, 2011

Remember when you were a kid and watch The Wizard of Oz and you cowered in terror from those awful flying monkeys? But then you realized that evil flying monkeys weren’t real? Turns out all you have to fear is robotic hummingbirds. There’s a hummingbird drone prototype landing on windowsills and capturing video, all part of the ongoing miniaturization of drone aircraft. The big spy plane is one thing but new drones are more like hummingbirds or flying pencils.

The New York Times reports:

By 2030, the military envisions swarms of ‘spy flies’ equipped with sensors and microcameras to detect enemies, nuclear weapons or victims buried in rubble.
