Pinterest is a rising star, driving tons of traffic

John Moe Feb 2, 2012

I’ve been saying it for a while now: if you want to be ahead of the curve, the social network to watch is Pinterest. Because things are getting very interesting over there. Or should I say PINTERESTING? No, I should not. Pinterest is now driving more referral traffic than YouTube, Google+, and LinkedIn combined. And it’s only a tenth of a percentage point behind Twitter. And it’s growing like crazy while everyone else is staying pretty flat. That’s all according to a recent report from Shareaholic.
This is all being accomplished while the site is invitation only. You can request an invite from the site or get one from someone you know.
So is this the new Facebook? Is this the wave that will sink Big Face?
Well, maybe. I wonder, though, about the focus of it. At the moment, Pinterest has a strong focus on fashion, decorating, food, and crafts. It skews heavily female. So can it grow huge if that stays the same?
Or can it expand beyond in the same way that Facebook used to be for college students and now your mom is on it?
Regardless, watch Pinterest with interest.
