New Google changes roll out, people seem unaware, wandering as if in a dream

New Google starts tomorrow. Old Google dies today. And no one cares. We’ve been talking about this impending change for a while, how Google will accumulate information about you from all across the Google Universe: search, YouTube, Google News, Google+, wherever you go, and use that information together to form more targeted ads for you to see. We’ve known this was coming for some time and if you’ve been on Google in the last few weeks you’ve seen little notifications about it telling you that the changes are on the way.

Still, people really don’t give a rip, it turns out.

From England’s Daily Telegraph:

The repeated prompts and controversy have seemingly failed to generate much interest among British users, however. According to survey by YouGov for Big Brother Watch only 12 per cent have bothered to review the new document.
Some 47 per cent said they did not even know any changes were in the works.

It’s a bit academic, mind you, since you can’t opt out of this feature, although Google does offer some dashboard options for controlling what data about you Google uses.

But let’s be honest, people still won’t bother. Google will gather information and people will just not think about it. They won’t be opposed or in favor, it will just flow on by.

Besides, where are you going to go? Especially if you rely on a Gmail account, the cost of leaving in terms of work is pretty high. And what are you going to do, go with Bing and Hotmail? Yahoo and Yahoo mail?
