Murdoch and Jobs to launch The Daily next week?

John Moe Jan 11, 2011

The question mark there at the end is because evidently the January 19th date could still slip. But the plan is for Rupert Murdoch and Steve Jobs to be on stage together a week from tomorrow in San Francisco to unveil a daily newspaper for tablet computers. Murdoch is sinking $30 million into the project and has hired a ton of veteran journalists to write for it. Two things don’t square in my mind. One, the distribution model here is for the “paper” to come out every morning but then not really get updated blog-style over the course of the day, which seems like a clunky and backward way of looking at 21st century journalism. But two, Steve Jobs will be there and if the whole thing is as archaic as it sounds, I can’t believe he’d get involved. So maybe it’s not. Or maybe it’s a way of pioneering a better system for periodical reading so it’s the vehicle Jobs likes more than the passenger.
