Google planning a Kindle Fire competitor?
If you’ve heard the latest rumor about Google launching a branded tablet soon, I encourage you to grab the nearest shaker of salt because you’ll need at least a grain.
According to DigiTimes, the tablet will debut this spring and come in somewhere below $199. So the idea is that it would compete not with the iPad but with the Kindle Fire, which is currently $199. Google Executive Chairman has already gone on record as saying Google was planning to market a tablet in the next six months but didn’t really give a time frame beyond that and didn’t mention a price point. DigiTimes is also the outlet that reported Apple would be announcing two new versions of the iPad this month and that doesn’t seem to be happening. One might be dubious as well given that Google currently does very little in the way of manufacturing and it’s the companies that do a lot of manufacturing that tend to get the big bulk discounts that allow for super cheap price points. Amazon and Apple fit that bill, Google doesn’t at the moment.
