Facebook wants you to get out of the house

John Moe Dec 28, 2011

New Facebook feature just launched. Let’s follow the money and figure it out. Instead of just listing all the events you’ve been invited to (you know, like that poetry reading by your friend from middle school who lives on the other side of the country, yeah, I’ll totally be there), Facebook now offers suggestions for other things you could go to as well. Mostly it’s public events that your Friends are also attending. So: why is this happening? You see the events, you go to some events. You see your Friend there and you meet their friends and you Friend those people. More reasons to go on Facebook. You check in at the event, Facebook learns more about your tastes and tailors ads for you. Facebook knows more about you based on your web of Friends and your movements and locale and tastes and can sell narrower ads for higher rates to advertisers and then Facebook collects…THE MONEY! We found it!

Or maybe Facebook just wants to be nice and wants you to go have fun.

No. It’s the money.

There’s a lot happening in the world.  Through it all, Marketplace is here for you.

You rely on Marketplace to break down the world’s events and tell you how it affects you in a fact-based, approachable way. We rely on your financial support to keep making that possible.

Your donation today powers the independent journalism that you rely on. For just $5/month, you can help sustain Marketplace so we can keep reporting on the things that matter to you.
