Amazon just launched a service where you can send in your used electronics items and get store credit. You go to the site, find the item you wish to send in, mark what kind of condition it’s in, and then print out a shipping label. When Amazon gets it (and it is what you say it is in the condition you say it’s in), they credit a commensurate amount of money to your account. It’s an expansion of a program they’ve been doing with games and DVDs for a while. Then you can buy more stuff and the magical carousel of consumerism continues to revolve in the dreamy way to which we have become accustomed. I’m not sure what happens to the stuff you send in, though. Do they resell it as used merchandise? Burn it in a ceremonial fire? Shoot it into space?
