Check out the Marketplace Reader, a digital audio magazine
In the newest issue of the Marketplace Reader, a digital audio magazine, Kai Ryssdal goes one-on-one with leaders from some of the world's great companies to reveal what drives them, how they look at the world, and what it takes to tranform a company from small business to big-time success.
The compilation of interviews, mixed with additional reporting and multimedia, are part of Marketplace's long-running series Conversations from the Corner Office. "When we started this series at Marketplace, we wanted to get an idea of how CEOs of some of this country's biggest companies think: What keeps them up at night, what they see for the future of their industry and why they make the decisions they do," writes Ryssdal in his introduction note. "These conversations are real. Sometimes they're confrontational. Sometimes they're thought-provoking. But always, they reveal something about the inner workings of the American economy."
How it works
The Marketplace Reader is an interactive e-book we've built combining some of Marketplace's best radio reporting with all the advantages of a long-form, multimedia digital magazine. You can read, listen or interact with our great stories and interviews on your own time, online or offline, on your iPad or iPhone. And it's just the latest of many ways you can experience the voices and personality of Marketplace on your mobile device.
To get the most out of your Marketplace Reader experience, activate the multimedia "Extras" before you start reading. To do that, click the "Extras" icon or tap on your device screen.
The extras include audio clips and full-length interviews, Google Maps, related web links presented in an in-app browser, PDF documents, and video. You'll see icons for these extras spread throughout each chapter. Click on the "Extras" icon to turn off the extras to read without interruption.
If a chapter is available as audio as well as text, you will see an Audio Book icon appear in the toolbar. Click play to listen. As the audio plays, the page will automatically scroll in unison so you can read along as you listen.
Issue One: Big Thinkers
Featuring interviews with billionaire Warren Buffett, innovator Elon Musk or hip-hop revolutionary will.i.am, the common thread in first issue we call "Big Thinkers" is that you can build something from nothing — and change the world in the process.
Whether it's reimagining Wall Street, disrupting industries, or conquering space, all of our visionaries think big.
Future issues of the Marketplace Reader will tackle other themes and important topics, including coverage streams from our Sustainability Desk, the Wealth and Poverty Desk and our own Paddy Hirsch and his Whiteboard, to name a few. We expect to publish new issues to the app at least once a month.
Issue Two: The Whiteboard
Marketplace Sr. Editor Paddy Hirsch put his popular Whiteboard series to work in the second issue of the Marketplace Reader to explain why the economic collapse of the banking system may have been a Crisis Wasted.
With his trademark explainer videos, audio clips and written articles, Hirsch looks back over the last five years since the advent of the financial crisis to see what has changed in our banking system and policy making. Or, what hasn't changed. Hirsch examines where the fault lines lie in our financial system, and what remains vulnerable to another economic shock.
A pilot project
The Marketplace Reader is a pet project for us that was born out of more than a year of research and digital training. We dubbed the project “Digital Disruptors,” and it was generously funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It allowed us to engage with innovative thinkers from academia and industry in a series of conversations about the future of media in the digital age. And one of the key things we learned was to try new things. One of those new things is the Marketplace Reader, powered by a start-up publishing company, The Atavist, makers of the Creatavist App.
We hope you enjoy this new format as much as we enjoyed creating it for you. And please, share your feedback so we can improve and evolve it with each new issue.
