100% recyclable... bath tissue? Yuck.

A Minnesota colleague of mine, Cindy Ojczyk, sent me a tip on some bath tissue she'd spied that was labeled "100% Recyclable."

When I went to do a little homework, I found a good greenwashing blog post on the product already online identifying the same issue. I also found a reference to the "company" (Advantage Marketing, a redistribution network) on the site of Conservatree, a former-paper-products-distribution-company-turned-nonprofit. I haven't heard of them, but their site looks believable - can anyone confirm they are as good as they sound?

For what it's worth, they list Advantage Renature as having 20% post-consumer recycled content. Could be worse.

The remaining question: why in the world would you market your bath tissue as recyclable?

That's right, it may be icky, but some people are willing to take the extra step just to care for mother earth. There are a lot of ways we can help, and one of them is recyclable toilet papers.

Bath tissues equals toilet rolls? Like with Vipul, we've had recyclable toilet rolls for years, it's good since more and more people now have increased environmental awareness.

And yes, recyclable toilet papers. :) Yuck!

I had to look up "bath tissue", because I had never heard the term! It sounds like something you wipe your nostrils with after the bath. ;P

So. Toilet paper? Recyclable? Like in made into paper plates after use? Oooh! That's hardcore recycling! :D

Unless it's full of dyes and bleach and stuff, it can of course be made into yummy compost for your garden - that's recycling of sorts, innit? - but I believe that compost loos are rather far and few between still, even among hardcore eco nutters.

I'm shocked (or missing the point!) we have had 100% recycled 'bath tissue' for years (although we are far more direct and call it toilet roll) for years and every major supermarket sells it.

I remember the school jokes thirty years ago...'recycled toilet paper...do you get it...yuck!' but we have moved on and, slowly, people are realizing the insanity of killing virgin trees to wipe one's behind!
