Rick Perry on Fed stimulus: 'Almost treasonous'

This final note today. You might have heard or seen this tape already, Texas Governor Rick Perry last night speaking about Ben Bernanke, the chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States, and how the governor doesn't much care for the Fed's current position on monetary policy.

Rick Perry: Printing more money to play politics at this particular time in American history, is almost treacherous, er, treasonous, in my opinion.

Worth a note -- should one care to check -- that the penalty for treason in this country is death.

Someone may wish to remind Governor Perry that advocating secession from the United States of America, as he so coyly did in April 2009, is also treason.

Gov. Perry is being rightly chastised for his thuggish remarks about Mr. Bernanke for which he should apologize. Looking past that he also reveals that he has a very poor understanding of how the Fed works. His spokesman had this to say in response to criticism.

“He is passionate about getting federal finances under control,” the spokesman, Ray Sullivan, said in an interview here. “They shouldn’t print more money, they should cut spending and move much more rapidly to a balanced budget.”

If Gov. Perry believes that the Fed controls spending and can balance the budget then he clearly has no understanding of how our government works.

Indeed, one of the many, sometimes contradictory, mandates of the Fed is to promote long term growth.

For Gov. Perry to criticize the Fed for doing what it is supposed to do shows he is not ready for prime time.

I'd like to hear Gov. Perry talk about economics in Texas. When he ran for governor he ran on a platform of economic prosperity and budget surpluses. Then all of a sudden post election there were huge deficits and the state ended up making huge spending cuts in areas like education. Where did the surplus go so fast? Perry is a carpetbagger in my opinion.

To call Rick Perry a demagogue would be an understatement. He is part of this new breed of "leadership" in the GOP which scares me half to death. They have no interest in real solutions, and I don't even believe they have the best interests of the country at heart. They're simply pandering to the panic, fear and ignorance of the extremist right-wing fringe of the GOP. This is only about a power grab. Rick Perry knows nothing about economics, and I'm not sure he wants to. To have any sort of academic knowledge is probably seen as too liberal by these guys.

How come the crack that Bernanke was appointed by a Republican which was in the broadcast is scrubbed here? Did you finally wake up to the fact the Gov Perry has been criticizing Pres Bush's economic policies for some time??

I live in Texas, Perry's criticism of Bush from prior to Obama getting elected is a fantasy in your mind.

Most well informed Texans can't point to anything Perry has done specifically to make their life better.
