Looks matter -- even for annual company reports

A final note. There's an old saying in business: "You can try putting lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."

Well, maybe it depends on what color you use -- or how many colors you use. A new study by the University of Miami's School of Business Administration finds that "prettying up" a company's annual report can cause investors to place a higher value on a company. Just adding an extra color to the report, for example, can have the same effect on perceptions as a 20 percent increase in annual revenue.

I don't know, color me yellow: I read these reports, I always have a jaundiced view.

Thanks for your interest. We're in touch with the University of Miami to get them to provide a link. We'll post it here once they provide one.

For $31.50 you too can get a copy of "When and how aesthetics influences financial decisions" from the Fall 2010 issue of the Journal of Consumer Physhology in which the above reported study was published.

Do you happen to have the name of the study? Would love to read it but can't seem to locate it.

Thanks - Mike

I would also love to see this study. One colour= 20% increase in revenue? Sounds like a lot... even knowing how print design can win over an audience.

I am sure it changes the perception of readers, as does great typography and a phenomenal concept and layout. One more colour without great design would be.. well, just one more colour n'est-ce pas?
