Introducing the ReMarket Podcast

Participants dressed up to represent Foxconn workers take part in a protest against Foxconn, which manufactures Apple products in mainland China.

Welcome to the inaugural edition of ReMarket.

What's it all about?  A couple of weeks ago, we had this idea to put together a selection of some of our favorite stories each week, that we could share with each other.  Sort of an in-house "best of," and we could take it in turns, based on who wanted to work on it.  Informal, no muss, no fuss. Then it occured to somebody that our listeners might like a little behind-the-scenes look at why and how we pick the stories we do across the Marketplace shows.

So I took the first pass, and the stories I chose this week all come from our PM program.  This week, you can hear why and how we covered the Homeless Hotspots program happening at South by Southwest (homeless people in Austin acting as wireless Internet hotspots), and why we talked to one of its participants.  You can also hear one of our most talked about show opens -- maybe ever -- as host Kai Ryssdal introduces our segment analyzing the scathing op-ed by Greg Smith about why he was resigning from Goldman Sachs. And finally, a story that led to our website having its best-ever single day of traffic -- reporter Rob Schmitz examining the allegations raised by monologist Mike Daisey about Apple's operations in China. Rob's reporting caused the public radio program This American Life to retract an episode dedicated to Daisey's false claims.

We hope you'll take the time to listen to our podcast, and let us know what you think. I'll give it another go this week, and then pass it off to other members of the staff.  Leave a comment or email us.
