It's official: Pittsburgh is the most liveable city in the U.S.

The Economist Intelligence Unit has released its 2011 Liveability Ranking and Overview, and the Steel City tops the U.S. list, beating out Los Angeles (44th), New York (56th), and even Honolulu (30th).

But it's not all good news. Not a single U.S. city ranked in the world's top 10, or even top 20 most

liveable cities. On that list, Pittsburgh ranked 29th globally. Vancouver, Canada, topped the list, followed by Melbourne, Australia.

"Mid-sized cities in developed countries with relatively low population densities tend to score well by having all the cultural and infrastructural benefits on offer with fewer problems related to crime or congestion," said Jon Copestake, author of the report, in a press release.

The Economist Intelligence Unit was founded in 1946 as the in-house research unit for the Economist Magazine. The livability ranking

examines the living conditions in 140 cities around the world and rates each city across five categories: stability, health care, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.

The report didn't hold any good news for Harare, Zimbabwe, which came last place. The report notes that despite high hopes for the 2011 election, Harare's low stability and heath care scores "paint a bleak picture."

Pittsburgh is a great city to live in and raise a family in. I'm happy that it's receiving the credit it deserves.

Really can not put much faith into these rankings for our U.S. cities when you find Detroit ranked 6th, or D.C. ranked 2nd. Really?

the part i don't get is where detroit comes in number 7. I grew up outside of detroit, and that city isn't livable. there isn't a grocery store or movie theater anywhere within city limits. if its referring to metrodetroit (the suburbs of detroit) this makes a lot more sense, but this poll is about cities...

I am from Detroit proper and live in virginia outside DC.

If you think about it based on pure qualitative data. Detroit would be a very livable city in US standards.

All those other cities have relatively high crime rates as well. But the population Density of the city of Detroit is very low. 140 or so odd square miles and 850,000 people. Also Detroit still has all the cultural amenities, Museums, Music, Etc. and housing is by far the most affordable.

As I said I live in the DC areas, and they cant move a once a snow to save there life, while Detroit, clears the streets before it hits the ground.

Detroit is the only place you can rent a mansion fo 700 dollars a month got to one of the largest museums in the cxountry and then walk to Class as a college student without a job.

You just might get shot. ha ha

There is hope for Zimbabwe. After the Federal Government and the Federal Reserve finish working over the US economy, Zimbabwe will be bumped up one spot to next-to-the-last.
