Just say no to 'Nemo'

A winter weather warning for 'Nemo,' the Weather Channel's name for the massive snow storm expected to hit the East Coast this weekend.

This final note today, in which I opine against the use of storm names that The Weather Channel dreams up.

One would hope the sheer commercialism and profit-driving motivation would be clear enough. But in case it's not, two examples from the Weather Channel's own website should seal the deal.

One, they say, "In today's social media world, a name makes it much easier to reference in communication."

In other words, storms need a Twitter hashtag?

And two, the next storm name after Nemo is Orko. Which, and correct me if I'm wrong, is a character from the Masters of the Universe cartoon franchise.

I've been waiting to hear disparaging words about this inane Weather Channel practice. Just part of the dumbing down of the WC since they have been traded amongst corporations. Since you have more influence, Kai, I invite you to submit next year's list:
Winter Storm Assinine, Winter Storm Banal, Winter Storm Clueless, Winter Storm Ridiculous, Winter Storm Oblivious, Winter Storm Puerile. Winter Storm Shard-born...

Kai, as I never watch the Weather Channel, but always listen to Marketplace, I can assure you that if you do choose to give storms names, I will be using the ones you dream up.
