America's most peaceful states

And this final note. The Institute for Economics and Peace releases an annual index of the most peaceful states. This year's winner is no surprise, because it's won the last 10 times.

It's where America's day begins, so they say. I'm looking at you, Maine. Lowest violent crime rates; smallest number of police per capita; and the list goes on.

At the other end of the scale: Louisiana. Where America's day never ends -- but would we want it to there?

I'm a non~native who moved to Maine 25 years ago. It is true, Maine people are calm and peaceful compared to the 5 other states and countries in which I've lived, and many locations I've visited. A friend once made the observation that to get murdered in Maine, one must do four things: 1. Drink hard liquor, 2. ...after midnight, 3. ...in a trailer, 4. ...with your family.
