The federal budget for food stamps doubled during the recession, but major cuts to the program are now on the table.

About 45 million Americans used food stamps in May 2011. That means about 15 percent of the population now relies on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, an increase of 12.1 percent from 2010. See how your state compares in this interactive Marketplace Map.
