Even though the recession’s technically over and the financial crisis started more than five years ago, fact is that people are still happy just to have a job. Almost any job.

But there are some jobs in this economy that don’t get any love. Not the jobs, and not the people who have ’em. For our latest in our series, You Hate My Job, Dr. Katherine Toubian, describes the challenges she comes across as a dentist.

“Thoughout the years, I’ve learned that patients have a lot of anxiety, and it starts with their childhood experience,” she says. “At some point, the dentist might have inflicted some pain and without even talking to them, basically strapping them down into the chair. So throughout their adulthood, they have a huge fear of dentistry. My goal is when they come into my office, I’d like to undo that. But you can’t undo years of anxiety.”

She says the recession has impacted the amount of patients she sees, and people are more often going online, carefully reading patients’ reviews of dentistries.

“It used to make me crazy amongst all my colleagues; I used to lose sleep over it,” she adds. “But you do the best you can.”
