Walmart, Target join the mobile payments race

Big retailers join the race to develop payment systems for mobile phones. But will consumers pay with smartphones instead of credit cards?

Kai Ryssdal: Consider the cell phone. You can email, shoot videos, read the paper, get directions, text -- oh and call someone. That's a bare-bones list of what we do with our mobile devices. More and more we're paying for things, too. It's early days yet for mobile payments as a business model, but it's already worth more than $172 billion a year worldwide. Which means everybody wants a slice. Today more than a dozen big retailers -- including the biggest of them all -- said they're in.

Stacey Vanek Smith: Walmart, 7-Eleven and Target are some of the merchants putting a lot of money where your mouth is. They're part of a group working on a system that would let shoppers pay for things with their phones.

Industry consultant Richard Crone says each store would have its own app.

Richard Crone: Siri, open the Target app. Siri, open the Macy's app. So it makes it easy.

If you open the app, the store knows you're there, says Richard Oglesby, a mobile payments analyst for the Aite Group.

Richard Oglesby: A picture of the consumer pops up and it gives the opportunity for the merchant to look up and say, 'Hey Stacey, it's good to see you. How can I help you today?'

OK, that's creepy. But it's also good business says Oglesby. Now the store can look me up and see that I buy a lot of shoes and send a coupon for shoes to my phone. But consultant Debra Kaye isn't so sure consumers will sign onto this. She points out only 11 percent of us use mobile payments.

Debra Kaye: OK, so if I'm in Walmart, I have to know which app to use to pay in the Walmart. If I'm in Starbucks, I have to know which one to use in Starbucks. Is that really more convenient than just pulling out one credit card?

Still, consultant Richard Crone says consumers could see a financial advantage if they start linking their shopping app to a personal budget app that help them track and control spending. Of course, you can always put your budget app on hold, says consultant Debra Kaye.

Kaye: If you're already at the cash register, and you've got this thing that you want to buy, and there's a little buzz that says uh-uh, uh-uh, don't do it -- are you going to put it back? I don't think so.

The shoes... stay in the basket.

What a wonderful thing...make it easier to allow hackers to access our bank accounts by one stop shopping through telephones. that seem to have dubious security at best. Another reason not to buy an expensive electronic leash ... increasing my ability to impulse buy is not something I need.

I for one never foresee myself using my phone as a payment device. It'll be slower than using a credit card, and NFC is so easily hackable.
Yesterday my wife told me about how she was checking out of the store before she realized that she didn't have her wallet on her, and so she couldn't pay for what was being rung up. Now, if she could pay with her phone, she would have, because she had her phone on her. But because she didn't have her wallet, that means she also didn't have her drivers license. So will mobile payments encourage people not to have their drivers license on them when they go to the store?

Why do some people assume women are shoe junkies? When I read Stacey Vanek Smith say' The shoes....stay in the basket', I winced, just as I did when we had a tv and happened upon HGTV where people were looking for a home to buy and a wife/partner would say the biggest closet was HERS for HER shoes. That is so stupid!!

Well, it seems that most reporting these days -- especially of the audio/spoken nature -- must have an obligatory cute or clever twist at the end to punctuate the work. I personally find it a weak method to close a story. To propose an answer to your question: Stereotypes die hard, especially when they are re-enforced.
