Volkswagen releases the Bulli van concept vehicle

The 81st Gevena International Motor Show kicks off this week, and motorheads are already buzzing about big news from Volkswagen. The New York Times Wheels blog is reporting that VW will introduce the Volkswagen Bulli concept car today. The Bulli concept derives its name from the original1950 Microbus of the same name, and was first seen by car enthusiasts in 2001. For various reasons, production of the new Bulli was put on hold, but now VW fans everywhere have reason to celebrate. Volkswagen says the new concept is more compact, affordable, and is equipped with more sustainable technologies.

The 21st century redesign is dramatically different from its 1950s predecessor. The classic panoramic windows, seating for nine, sliding doors and wimpy engine have been replaced by four conventional doors, an electric motor, and a panoramic sunroof. The Bulli still has a single bench seat in the front, with space for three in the rear.

A Volkswagen press release says the "is spacious like it was in 1950," but now "it has clean styling like never before."

This shorter, wider re-imagining of the hippie van also features an iPad-based "infotainment system." A removable iPad in the center console will control such functions as Bluetooth hands-free telephone and a navigation system, as well as the climate control system.

You can see more pictures of the Volkswagen Bulli here, and don't miss Life magazine's photo gallery of classic VW buses.

EPIC failure VW..
We, the VW loyalist are awaiting for you VWOA to wake up and realize how EPIC the VW bus was.
1.Offer a bus that looks like a bus-walk through, double cargo doors, rear hatch ,kookie interiors and camping gear.
2.Make it green / enviro friendly to the extent that makes good market sense .
3.Have a ad that looks back at its US history and the ads that made it famous..
You folks are missing the mark with this offering.
4. Offer a diesel version , we are ready.
5. Skylights/windows/Sliding sunroof....
Dont mess this up.

What a great concept. Was hoping for an electric Element to replace my 2002 Jetta Wagon, but this might just do the trick. (I have heard the Element is being discontinued, too). I need something with good mileage gas or electric, that can hold 2 bicycles (and other stuff). My 94 4-door Civic got over 42 mpg, even when 12 yrs old. The Jetta has trouble reaching 30. So...I hope this thing will have adequate mileage, power and affordable price.

The masses have spoken. Give us a real van, something we can camp in or fill with our friends. Add a solar panel on top to charge it up while it sits in the parking lot.

I won't be trading in my '99 Eurovan camper with 215,000 expensive miles on it. How about a cutting edge camper?

Hey, I felt the same as most of you on the room and styling not really being the Kombi/Vanagon/Bus of old. But what is of note here is the mileage on one charge as is shown in the press release - 186.4 miles. The greater chassis length and width probably allow for more lithium ion batteries. At almost twice the mpc of the all-electric Nissan Leaf, bring it on now VW!

sadly, I must agree in saying that the new VW Bulli looks weirder than 1958's Edsel.
