Volkswagen releases the Bulli van concept vehicle

The 81st Gevena International Motor Show kicks off this week, and motorheads are already buzzing about big news from Volkswagen. The New York Times Wheels blog is reporting that VW will introduce the Volkswagen Bulli concept car today. The Bulli concept derives its name from the original1950 Microbus of the same name, and was first seen by car enthusiasts in 2001. For various reasons, production of the new Bulli was put on hold, but now VW fans everywhere have reason to celebrate. Volkswagen says the new concept is more compact, affordable, and is equipped with more sustainable technologies.

The 21st century redesign is dramatically different from its 1950s predecessor. The classic panoramic windows, seating for nine, sliding doors and wimpy engine have been replaced by four conventional doors, an electric motor, and a panoramic sunroof. The Bulli still has a single bench seat in the front, with space for three in the rear.

A Volkswagen press release says the "is spacious like it was in 1950," but now "it has clean styling like never before."

This shorter, wider re-imagining of the hippie van also features an iPad-based "infotainment system." A removable iPad in the center console will control such functions as Bluetooth hands-free telephone and a navigation system, as well as the climate control system.

Nowhere NEAR the size or utility of the old bus - and it looks like an overinflated mini-cooper.

Disappoint. Except for the electric part...

I remember when the last bus concept came out. I was looking forward to it. Then it just vanished. I would have preferred that they brought back the full sized VW Bus. That would have been really cool.

First off, it needs a higher clearance. Second, it's uglier than crap, and will never have a history like the older models, which were more functional. This is designed to just give your ass a ride.

That's not my magic bus. As one who traveled for years in a '63 Kombi w/ that great big sunroof. Spend many dreamy nights under the stars all over US, Candada and Mexico. This looks like yet another soccer mom minivan. Often wish I had held on the to old van, but heh, I had great times and have moved on with a Landcruiser.

What's the range on a electric only Motor? 100 miles if you don't drive over 50 mph, I don't think this was meant to replace the old mini/camper, if you need space for stuff and people VW has a mini van in it's lineup already. This one is meant for short trips or commute to work. Bringing back the mini bus is not a good idea. An updated version with a new function is a good idea.

"if you need space for stuff and people VW has a mini van in it’s lineup already"

Not in the U.S. it doesn't. Not anymore. We want a minivan. You can tell from the door placement that this "van" is tiny. Agree that it looks like a taller Mini.
