YouTube turns 5

Daryl Paranada May 18, 2010

YouTube celebrated its fifth birthday on Sunday. And with 2 million people viewing videos on the site daily, it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down yet.

In celebration of the milestone, the Google-owned site launched its YouTube Five Year Channel and a project that lets users discuss how the site has impacted them.

In a blog post, the site said its daily views are nearly double the primetime audience of all three major networks combined. “What started as a site for bedroom vloggers and viral videos,” the post said, “Has evolved into a global platform that supports HD and 3D, broadcasts entire sports seasons live to 200+ countries.”

Below you can find the first video on YouTube, uploaded at 8:27PM on Saturday April 23rd, 2005. The video was shot by Yakov Lapitsky at the San Diego Zoo.
