Some L.A. employees may get 3-day work week

Daryl Paranada Apr 6, 2010

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is mulling a plan that would shut down all city departments — except for police, public safety and those generating money — for two days a week.

The move comes in response to the city contoller’s warning that L.A. may run out of cash by the end of the month.

In a statement, the mayor said:

“There are no easy decisions or simple ways to solve this budget crisis. But as the CEO of this great city, it is my responsibility to make these difficult but necessary decisions to steer the city out of this crisis and onto solid financial ground.”

Among the departments that may be affected are courthouses and libraries. What do you think of the mayor’s plan? Is it smart thinking or a potential disaster waiting to happen?
