The Daily: Is News Corp.'s iPad-only news publication the future of digital journalism?

Extra! Extra! Read all about it -- on your iPad. The Daily, the first national news publication created exclusively for the iPad, was born Wednesday - the child of an alliance between Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. and Steve Jobs' Apple Inc.

The media magnate is betting on two things: 1.) Apple has a winning technology platform in the iPad - a pretty safe bet. 2.) Journalism content produced exclusively on this platform will usher in a new future for journalism, namely one that can generate ad revenue and entice online users to pay for Web content. That one is riskier.

The Daily offers a mix of text, photos, video, audio, and interactive features in a digital magazine-like format that will publish 365 days a year. Users can explore 360-degree photos, for example, and tailor the content they receive. Topic areas include news, gossip, opinion, arts & life, apps & games, and sports.

The publication currently is only offered in Apple's iPad App Store, and it's available free for two weeks. After that, it'll cost subscribers 99 cents a week, or $39.99 a year.

Will The Daily be the future model for digital journalism? It's still too early to tell. Will it be part of your daily grind? Let us know your thoughts!
