Reports are out this morning that the main newspaper in New Orleans, the Times-Picayune, will be making massive staff cuts and even cutting back on its daily printing schedule.

In today's Mid-day Extra we spoke with Jed Horne, who served as city editor at the paper during Hurricane Katrina and has also written a book on post-Katrina New Orleans.

As someone born and breaded in New Orleans I'm sorry to see this news from my hometown paper, but as someone who's found reading it an excruciating task I'm not that surprised, especially with their coverage of the BP spill. The writing is often good, but too often I've had to reread things multiple times to understand just what it is the writer's trying to say, and wondering what on earth is wrong with the editor for letting it go out like that. I've also recently unsubscribed from their daily newsletter because the quality is so poor (no word of the real top stories and some stories duplicated in the same newsletter). I hope the new bosses can see how bad the paper's gotten and fix things. I don't even bother going to their website anymore, instead relying on a local station's news coverage to find out what's happening back home.
