TEXT OF STORY

Kai Ryssdal: They managed to finish up the financial overhaul bill alright, but Congress let an extension of unemployment benefits die last night. A Republican filibuster in the Senate took care of it. At least 1.2 million people have lost their unemployment checks since the program expired June 2.

Brett Neely reports that may be bad news for an already shaky economy.

Brett Neely: The emergency unemployment benefits weren't generous, says Maurice Emsellem at the National Employment Law Project.

Maurice Emsellem: Folks who have been unemployed for close to a year in many cases, they are not living large on $310 a week, I can guarantee you that.

But those modest payments have a big impact on the larger economy, says Heidi Shierholz. She's a labor economist at Economic Policy Institute.

Heidi Shierholz: It's also really good stimulus.

That's because of how unemployment insurance works.

Shierholz: Those are people who are the most likely to have no choice but to spend it immediately in their local economies.

200,000 unemployed Americans are now losing their benefits every week, which means they're cutting back on food, gas and other necessities.

Shierholz: It actually will add to the unemployment rate to reduce the benefits to the long-term unemployed.

Economists predict that economic growth will start to slow because unemployment payments haven't been renewed.

In Washington, I'm Brett Neely for Marketplace.

No government spending *can* be "really good stimulus." There's no such thing. History has proven that government spending depresses the economy; shrinking the government will improve it. This sort of thing might work as a temporary stimulus, *if* we had the money to spend. But we don't.

tHE BEST WAY TO GET TO PEOPLE IS STAGE A RIOT. THAT SEEMS TO WORK. I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW WE CAN GIVE MONEY TO OTHER COUNTRIES, AND HERE WE ARE HURTING. I JUST DON'T GET IT.

I know someone who was laid off about three years ago and was still getting unemployment benefits from the State of Ohio. They file online or over their phone and the funds were being direct deposited. That is all fine and good but the person wasn't making any attempt to find work and they relocated to Florida and were still collecting on Ohio. If they were able to do that, I wonder how many others were collecting and not even living in the state they were collecting from.

well the republicans have called us the unemployed animals, drug users, and spoiled. WE HAVE A MESSAGE FOR U POLITICIANS. Like animals we will fight back out of a corner and unlike animals we come for blood! We will use the diligence of a crackhead looking for his/her next high in finding you! And we will show you how spoiled our mercy towards you has become!

Whatever happen to Americans growing at least some of their own food? There was a time, some still remember, when more than 50 percent of Americans were growing food in their own gardens -- during WWII in "victory gardens." Today, we grow about 70 percent of all the food we eat (okay, so we're on a farm). We also cook it ourselves. You don't need to be a chef to eat healthy and well, as I write about in RURAL RENAISSANCE and EDIBLE EARTH.

With 5-6 applicants for every open position, what happens to the rest even if all those jobs are filled? That is why extensions are still needed. But I do agree that something should be done to pay for them, like eliminating unnecessary subsidies and/or pork. Do we still need the Mohair Subsidy ... really?

I heard yesterday on the internet... that the senators fighting sooo hard to help the unemployment extention to be passed offer an idea of decreasing each foodstamp reciptant who recieves them by 11 dollars a month..Each State do their part to help pay for it. Now..if they could cut some of the foodstamps from reciptants like 40 dollars each that could pay for it. Easily.. Tripling the amount in question to definately HELP OUT IN THIS MATTER. YOU ask how are they going to make up for that to the people who are already stuggling to put food on their table.. the CONCLUSION...The people can well make up for it in the lost of foodstamps by clipping coupons.. i myself has turn 155 dollar food purchase and only paid 55 dollars... if i can do it.. ANYONE can. I know it sounds heartless to take from others to help us.. but i say its time to to start sharing what some have with the one who dont... US HURTING UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS wont be able to survive without it... YOU Cant get any help from the government if you dont have an address to send the paperwork to. PLEASE HELP US>> IF YOU CAN!! YOU figure.. Manufactures makes the coupons, the newspapers distributes the coupons, the stores accept the coupons, the consumers purchase food using coupon,,, hence JOBS, ECONOMY STEADY, EVERYONE SATISFIED!!!!!!!!! THINK about it..;)

I am not very educated on how all of this politics go.. but i hope this helps... if there is anything being a single mom for the past 10 years have taught me.. They dont give you foodstamps for a family of two unless you have NO income coming in...Normally a family of three which would considerally be a father, a mother, and child almost get better in the means of support when the amount of money to be eligible almost doubles.. 2600 for a family of three....1300 for a family of two to be eligible.. not putting in consideration that a family of two has THE SAME AMOUNT OF BILLS EACH MONTH AS A FAMILY OF THREE..so anyhow.. that being said...i recieve 16 dollars a month..i only bring in 1239 a month in unemployment.which barely pays rent, utilities, my car payment and insurance (which if got when i was working after my car of 11years died on me..) SO i had to become creative of how to feed my son and i... coupons have been my savior.. and i can teach anyone who would like to learn... im willing. I too have stood in those lines of a person have two carts FULL of food...and paying with their EBT card..NOT even remotely thinking of how much they could save if they took the time and effort ....as I stand there with my loaf of bread, my half gallon of milk, cheese, bologna, mac and cheese, hotdogs, and a carton of eggs... to last me for the whole month!!!! IT BREAKS MY HEART!!!!! but as a person with some pride instead of drowning in my sorrows.. i have been able to add cereal, mayo, mustard, hamburger, hamburger helper and chips...bringing my 16 dollars worth of foodstamps to a whopping 26 dollars by CLIPPING COUPONS!!! I just hope that if EVERYONE had the same IDEA to try to save on food from their foodstamps.. there just maybe more foodstamps to spread around... or in this case help pay for the UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSIONS>>>..... thank you for your time...i hope i can get a response back from you to let me know if this helps any... even if you want a few pointers on my couponing thats welcomed too...;o) thank you for your time
