Global outplacement firm Challenger, Grey & Christmas reported that employers cut 49,000 jobs in March, down 11 percent from February. Despite the month to month decline, job cuts for the first quarter were their highest since 2011.

This morning Citi says that total is about to shrink -- 11,000 job cuts worldwide in the next year or two, some of them at least here in the U.S.

Bank of America is accelerating plans to cut costs by laying off workers. According to the Wall Street Journal, the bank has set a target of cutting 16,000 jobs by the end of this year -- about 6 percent of the bank's workforce.
