New H1-B visa rules give workers more autonomy

It’s H-1B season, which means U.S. companies are once again competing for a limited number of spots— 85,000 — in a visa lottery. Registration opened this week after the federal government revamped the application process.
Workers with H1-B visas "have a lot more more negotiating power," said immigration attorney Ummehani Ismail.

Changes touted to make H-1B visa applications easier

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service this week announced some changes to the visa program for highly-skilled foreigners who fill U.S. jobs in technology, science, engineering and other fields. These changes are supposed to make the process of applying for H-1B work permits easier.  Click the audio player above to hear the full story.
Triple the number of applicants applied for the H1-B visa program last year. Chances of getting your application picked were only about one in three.

Foreign students may have a tougher time finding jobs in the U.S.

Since 2015 the U.S. has received close to 500,000 H1B visa applications. Only a third have been granted.
Arizona State University’s international student population has more than doubled in the past five years, from nearly 5,000 in 2011 to more than 12,000 in 2016. These students attended an ASU career fair in 2013.
