Despite strong year, individuals pull back on stocks

Interview by
Jeff Horwich
Oct 8, 2012
After a brief uptick, the percent of households owning stock is back down to where it was at the start of the financial crisis, according to new numbers from the Investment Company Institute.

Tracking a dollar around the world

by
Chris Farrell
Jun 15, 2012
Would you investigate the trajectory of a single dollar bill? Let me explain. So you go to the store and buy things, then you pay with a $100 bill. What happens to that note? In a nutshell, my question is: What is the route that a single bill takes? How does it circulate? How far can it travel? Homero, Sacramento, CA

The hazards of active trading

by
Chris Farrell
May 7, 2012
If watched closely, is it wise to jump between aggressive stock funds and bond funds during market runs such as the bull run so far this year? The year-to-date return is 18 percent for my strategy. My Fidelity account has rules regarding moving between funds, so I have to navigate those rules also. Marty, Cincinnati, OH

by
Chris Farrell
Mar 13, 2012
I'm seriously thinking of purchasing a small (six-unit) apartment building in a college town. I've never been a landlord and I'm already a single father of two with a full-time job. Am I NUTS? Clay, College Park, MD

What should we do with our money

by
Chris Farrell
Mar 2, 2012
We now want to invest some of our emergency fund that we believe is a little inflated, due to fears of the economy. I've looked around at fee-only advisers, but they all state that you should have at least $100,000 to start investing; otherwise, they don't feel like you are qualified to work with. What should we do with our money? We have about $15,000-20,000 that we want to invest, but we want to do the right thing. Could your staff help with some options? Thank you, Joshua, Riverside, CA

On our local NPR station, WFYI, a guest Saturday morning on Marketplace Money recommended an investment advice book to a young caller. We can't recall the title of the book. Know which one we mean? Thanks in advance, Tom, Indianapolis, IN

Waiting to transfer

by
Chris Farrell
Dec 22, 2011
My wife and I are transferring our Roth IRA accounts from our current institution to a new one in order to avoid a yearly maintenance fee that has been increasing every year. After selling off the funds, my current Roth IRA institution claims the funds must "settle" for a period of 3 days. Can you please explain to me what this means and if I could demand that they skip this settling and simply send me the distribution check so I can more quickly move it to the new institution? Patrick, Sheboygan, WI
