Interview by

Putting a priority on savings goals

by
Chris Farrell
Jan 30, 2012
I recently bought a house for the first time. I am in my early 50s and have a son in high school. I don't have life insurance. I have been receiving lots of advertisements in the mail telling me I should have life insurance or mortgage insurance. Should I buy term life insurance to protect my son? It is very hard for me to save money, and I'd rather save what I can for future college bills and my retirement. Thank you, Erika, Salisbury, CT

Term isn't for life

by
Chris Farrell
Jan 24, 2012
My husband and I have had term life insurance since we married. Now that our children are on their own, I'm considering canceling my life insurance. Is this "penny wise and pound foolish"? We no longer depend on my income to pay bills. What other reasons are there for keeping term life insurance? Jane, Shorewood, WI

A family margin of safety

by
Chris Farrell
Jan 12, 2012
My husband and I are late-in-life parents (he is 59 and I am 49) and we have a 1-year-old -- the absolute JOY of our lives. She is the only child for both of us and I am wondering about what you would suggest as the most cost-effective way to save for her future? Kathleen, Fergus Falls, MN

Life insurance and savings

by
Chris Farrell
Dec 19, 2011
I went to a financial advisor in hopes someone else could do more with my money. He suggested that I take full advantage of my employer's 401(k) when I am eligible (next year), but since I have been a good saver and expect an increase in income, I should consider using life insurance as a vehicle for tax-free retirement savings. I have mixed feelings about this. Christina, Atlanta, GA

Estate planning 101 for young families

by
Chris Farrell
Dec 7, 2011
I have a niece and nephew in their early 20s who have both recently started their own families. I know they do not have a will, advanced directive or a living trust because they are intimidated by the idea and cost of hiring an attorney to draw up the paperwork. Instead of a gift card this year, I would love to help make sure their assets and children are protected. Is there an easy/affordable product or site online I can use to help get them situated? Jeff, Cincinnati, OH
